Geography of The Yuan Dynasty
Shangdu was planned for Qubilai by the Chinese monk-official Liu Bingzhong (1216–1274), who was also responsible for the design of the new Yuan dynasty capital city of Dadu, located at the site of present-day Beijing. The Mongols ruled China for about one hundred years.

The Yuan Dynasty was a period of time when China was under the rule of the Mongol Empire. The Yuan ruled China from 1279 to 1368. It was followed by the Ming Dynasty. The Chinese had fought with the Mongol tribes of the north for hundreds of years.

The Yuan Dynasty (1279–1368) was China's first foreign-led dynasty, in between the Chinese Song and Ming dynasties. It was established by Kublai Khan, leader of the vast Mongol Empire, and fell into internal rebellion after it lost touch with its Mongol roots.

In 1367, Zhu Yuanzhang officially launched a deadly attack on the Yuan regime which was riddled with corruption and intrigue. Within a year, Zhu's army captured Dadu (currently Beijing), the capital of Yuan. Soon after, a new dynasty - the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) displaced the Yuan Dynasty.
